The WELL Building Standard is the first building standard to focus exclusively on the health and wellness of the people in buildings.

We spend most of our time inside buildings, how they are designed really affects the moods, thoughts, health and productivity of those who live and work in them. A well designed building should provide a safe, healthy, comfortable and stimulating environment and help to improve satisfaction and productivity of the users.

Choosing non-toxic building materials, considering thermal comfort, indoor air quality, odours, sound levels, quality of lights and light levels etc. will make living and working spaces more pleasant, comfortable and better for people.

WELL is an evidence and performance-based system for measuring, certifying and monitoring features that impact human health and well-being in the built environment, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.


Clean air is a critical component to our health. Globally, outdoor air quality is deteriorating due to pollution from traffic, construction, agricultural activity, combustion sources and particulate matter. The WELL Building Standard provides an approach that combines the installation of appropriate materials with the implementation of effective protocols to regularly disinfect targeted areas.


Drinking water contamination is a major public health issue. Many people receive water that has been exposed to potentially harmful levels of biological, chemical and mineral contaminants. The WELL Building Standard seeks to simultaneously preserve this precious resource while enhancing its quality for human health in the context of different uses.


Nutrition plays a key role in health maintenance, weight management and chronic disease prevention. A variety of social, economic, physiological and environmental factors can affect individual dietary behaviours such as distance and access to grocery stores and other places that have fresh fruits and vegetables, access to farmers’ markets, which the WELL Building Standard takes into account.


The indoor environment should be a place of comfort. In pursuit of that vision, the WELL Building Standard focuses on significantly reducing the most common sources of physiological disruption, distraction and irritation and on enhancing acoustic, ergonomic, olfactory and thermal comfort to prevent stress and injury and facilitate comfort, productivity and well-being.


Regular physical activity is essential to achieve optimal health, including weight management, chronic disease prevention and fitness maintenance. The WELL Building Standard recognises the physical activity-promoting policies and strategies that can be implemented in the built environment to encourage physical activity and reduce sedentariness.


In addition to facilitating vision, light influences the human body in non-visual ways, like physiological functions such as sleep patterns. The WELL Building Standard takes into account the current lighting codes and guidelines provide illuminance recommendations for different room types, derived from usual lighting requirements for typical activities per room.


While mental and physical health are often conceptualised as separate domains, our minds and bodies are inextricably connected. The WELL Building Standard identifies workplace policies that can be implemented to positively impact mood, sleep, stress levels and psychosocial status in order to promote and enable overall occupant health and well-being.
